Heat Rate Optimization

A practical program for measuring, tracking and improving plant heat rate. Covers all major calculation methods and identifies what can be done day-to-day to improve efficiency.

Heat Rate Optimization is an instructor-led StratEnergy training course in the Power Generation & Plant Performance track. The next published session runs in Manila, Philippines on 20–21 April 2027 as a face-to-face classroom course. See Who Should Attend below for the intended audience. Teams can also request in-house delivery.

Course Outline

1. Plant Efficiency Measured by Heat Rate

• Input/Output method — Btu (kcal)/kilowatt

• Turbine Heat Rate / Boiler Efficiency

• Corrected Design

• Stack CO2 flow / kW

2. Coal Balance — Tracking

• Stockpile inventories

• Weighing accuracy

• CV change / loss

3. Input/Output Method

• Heat Input — accuracy considerations

4. Heat Loss Method

• Output / Input — steam flow, conditions, coal flow and sample

• Air heater leakage, excess air

• Coal sample for ultimate analysis

• Exit gas conditions and temperatures

• Ash sample for LOI / carbon loss

• Identifying issues; method may be more accurate and less sensitive to flow measurement

5. CO2 Method for Heat Input

• Measuring CO2 and gas flow

• Comparison with heat-loss method

6. Improving Efficiency — What Can You Do?

• Burn dry coal

• Reduce excess air

• Manage air heater leakage

• Optimize combustion and pulverizer operation
