AC EHV and HV Substation Design in Singapore: SP Group’s Grid Modernization Journey
Singapore is strengthening its position as one of the world’s most reliable electricity networks through major investments in AC EHV and HV substation infrastructure, grid modernization, and underground transmission systems. Led by SP Group, the country is expanding its 230kV and 400kV transmission network to support rising electricity demand from data centers, urban development, electrification, and renewable energy integration.
One of the most significant developments is the Labrador Underground Substation Project — Singapore’s first large-scale 230kV underground substation and the largest in Southeast Asia. The project demonstrates how advanced substation engineering can coexist with dense urban environments while maximizing limited land space. Key engineering challenges included space optimization, thermal management, flood protection, and installation of heavy equipment such as 180-tonne transformers.
Singapore is also modernizing its substations through smart grid and digital technologies such as SCADA systems, predictive maintenance, AI-assisted analytics, digital protection relays, and cybersecurity systems. These innovations improve grid reliability, operational efficiency, and renewable energy integration capability.
As the country advances toward a low-carbon and energy-resilient future, substations are evolving into multi-functional infrastructure supporting renewable integration, battery energy storage systems, smart city development, and regional ASEAN power connectivity. Singapore’s continued investment in compact GIS-based substations and underground transmission infrastructure highlights the growing importance of AC EHV and HV substation design expertise in modern power systems engineering.
With the growing demand for expertise in advanced transmission infrastructure and smart grid technologies, StratEnergy Training Services is pleased to announce its upcoming AC EHV and HV Substation Design training in Singapore on 03–07 August 2026. The program is tailored for engineers, utilities, EPC contractors, and technical professionals seeking practical knowledge on modern substation planning, design, protection systems, underground transmission networks, and grid modernization strategies.
